MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Martín Maldonado found a formal-yet-fun way to honor the dads in his life.

The Royals catcher celebrated Father’s Day by wearing a blue necktie on his chest protector and had three hits to lift Kansas City over the Minnesota Twins 8-6 Sunday.

Maldonado scribbled the names of his dad, brother, family and close friends on the tie, along with “Happy Father’s Day” at the bottom. Pittsburgh Pirates backstop Elias Diaz wore the same tie in a game against Atlanta, which was provided by equipment manufacturer All-Star.

Maldonado was all business at the plate. He drove in two runs, one with a single during a three-run second inning and another with a double in the eighth.

Jorge López (1-6) pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief, giving up four hits, including a solo homer by Nelson Cruz in the seventh.

Ian Kennedy allowed an RBI double by Max Kepler but struck out Cruz with two runners on to record his seventh save in nine chances. Cruz believed he had checked his swing on the strikeout.

== The Twins are 47-23, ten games ahead of Cleveland for the AL Central lead. Minnesota tonight starts a three-game series against Boston to wrap up their week-plus long homestand. All three nights, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are 7:10 first pitches with 6:30 pre-game shows on AM-1300 KGLO.

IOWA CITY — Iowa guard Joe Wieskamp says he learned a great deal from the NBA Draft process. Wieskamp withdrew from the draft to return to the Hawkeyes after a freshman season in which he averaged just over 11 points and finished second in the Big Ten in three point percentage.

Wieskamp says it was a good experience for down the road.

Wieskamp hopes to take his game to the next level as a sophomore.

Damiris Dantas tied her career high with 22 points for the Lynx.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Christopher Bell won the NASCAR Xfinity series race Sunday at the Iowa Speedway, his fourth victory of the season and second straight in Newton.

Bell led 186 of 250 laps to claim his second short track win of 2019 by nearly two seconds. He also won at Bristol in April.

Pole-sitter Cole Custer was second, followed by Justin Allgaier and Harrison Burton. Zane Smith was fifth in just his fifth start in the series.

Custer briefly stole the lead with 32 laps left on a restart, but Bell quickly grabbed it back as the two cars made contact on Bell’s low pass. Bell then held Custer off on a restart with 10 to go by grabbing the high line.
