MASON CITY — After having their opener at the new Mason City Arena delayed, the North Iowa Bulls host Breezy Point tonight in NA3HL action. The Bulls were supposed to play their first contest in the new downtown multi-purpose arena this past Saturday, but icy conditions prevented Alexandria from making the trip to Mason City. Bulls coach Todd Sanden says he’s looking forward to having his team play a game in the new arena.

Fans will have two opportunities this weekend to see the arena, with Breezy Point coming to Mason City tonight followed by Rochester tomorrow night. The opening faceoff both nights is scheduled for 7:30.

DES MOINES — The Mohawk Hockey Club started the 2020 portion of their schedule last night picking up a point in the standings, but it was due to a 3-2 shootout loss at the Des Moines Capitals. Zak Molstad scored twice for the Mohawks in the second period, but the Capitals were able to even the score with two goals in the third, including the game-tying goal with 1:17 left. Brett Baxter scored the lone goal in the shootout for either team. The Mohawks now have a record of 2 wins-15 losses-and a shootout loss. They are off this weekend and will travel to Kansas City for a two-game weekend series next Saturday.

IOWA CITY — Iowa coach and Philadelphia native Fran McCaffery will return home on Saturday when his 23rd ranked Hawkeyes take on 21st ranked Penn State in the Palestra. Nicknamed the “Cathedral of College Basketball”, the Palestra has been home to several of the city schools including McCaffery’s alma mater Penn.

McCaffery says Penn State will be a challenge no matter where the game is played.

Injuries and illness have left Iowa’s roster thin and McCaffery has been forced to adjust practice.

Despite losing two starters to season ending injuries the Hawkeyes have posted a 10-3 record.

Penn State has won four straight and is 11-2 on the season. You can hear the game on AM-1300 KGLO starting with the pre-game at 12:00 noon on Saturday, with tipoff scheduled for 1 o’clock.

AMES — Iowa State sophomore guard Tyrese Haliburton will play on Saturday when Iowa State opens the Big 12 race at TCU. Haliburton missed Tuesday’s loss to Florida A&M with a sprained wrist suffered in practice.

Haliburton says it was tough to sit through Tuesday’s loss.

Haliburton says the Cyclones view the Big 12 as a fresh start.

Tipoff on Saturday is scheduled for 5 o’clock

LAS VEGAS – The 2018-19 NIACC men’s golf team has been recognized by the Golf Coaches Association of America as a 2019 NJCAA Division II Mark Laesch award winner.

Teams were recognized based on improvement in adjusted stroke average per round from the 2017-18 to 2018-19 seasons.

The NIACC team of Ben Boerjan, Austin Eckenrod, Jackson Hamlin, Matthew Heinemann, Zach Martin and John Patterson had a 13.61 adjusted stroke average.

NIACC coach Chris Frenz says it was an unexpected surprise to be notified that the team received the award, calling it a nice accomplishment and a tribute to the efforts of last year’s team.

The award is named after the founder of GolfStat, which Frenz says is the gold standard for college golf statistics. Laesch died last summer.

The other honorees by the Golf Coaches Association of America were Davidson (10.56) NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II’s CSU Dominguez Hills (9.8), NCAA Division III’s Rutgers-Camden (15.13), NAIA’s Loyola-New Orleans (9.93) and NJCAA Division I Ranger (18.2) from NJCAA Division I.

The NIACC men open the 2020 season at the Graceland Invitational on March 27-28.
