EVANSTON — Luka Garza scored 27 points as Iowa pulled away in the second half for a 75-62 win at Northwestern last night, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO. Hawkeye coach Fran McCaffery.

The Hawkeyes got a lift from the return of freshman guard C.J. Fredrick who finished with 11 points and five assists after missing two games with a foot injury.

Fredrick says he started feeling better at the end of last week but did not expect to play 31 minutes.

Iowa hosts Michigan on Friday night, with the tipoff at 8 o’clock on AM-1300 KGLO

WACO, TEXAS — A tough stretch begins for the Iowa State basketball team. Four of the Cyclones next five opponents are nationally ranked beginning with Wednesday night’s game at second ranked Baylor. ISU coach Steve Prohm says ball movement is the key against Baylor’s defense.

Under coach Scott Drew the Bears are 13-1.

Prohm wants sophomore guard Tyrese Haliburton to be even more aggressive on offense. Haliburton is averaging nearly 17 points per game.

The Cyclones have lost six straight games in Waco but several have been close.

Tipoff in Waco is scheduled for 7 o’clock tonight.

CEDAR FALLS — Northern Iowa takes a share of the Missouri Valley lead into Wednesday night’s game at home against Valparaiso. The Panthers are 3-1 in the Valley while the Crusaders are 2-2 after rallying for a home win over Drake.

That’s UNI coach Ben Jacobson says Valparaiso is more guard dominated this year.

IOWA CITY — Three Iowa Hawkeyes are leaving for the NFL Draft. Defensive end AJ Epenesa and offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs announced Tuesday they will skip their senior season to enter the NFL draft after helping lead the Hawkeyes to a 10-3 record and a win over USC in the Holiday Bowl. Both are projected as middle to late first-round selections and they join junior safety Geno Stone who announced last week he will enter the draft

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins and 2015 AL MVP Josh Donaldson have agreed to a four-year contract, a person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press. The contract includes a club option for a fifth season that would bring the total value to $100 million. The 34-year-old third baseman returned after an injury-spoiled 2018 to bat .259 with 37 homers, 94 RBIs and a .900 OPS for the Atlanta Braves last season. He earned $23 million on a one-year deal. The Twins set a major league record with 307 home runs last season and won the AL Central. They were swept by the New York Yankees in the AL Division Series.
