More details released in semi-bicycle accident near Sheffield

SHEFFIELD — Authorities have released a few more details about Monday morning’s semi versus bicycle accident south of Sheffield.
The Iowa State Patrol says a semi operated by 62-year-old Dennis Gjerde of McCallsburg was driving northbound on US Highway 65 at about 3:40 AM and struck a bicyclist who was also traveling northbound. The bicyclist, which is identified as a 26-year-old from Sheffield, but a name is not being released, was transported with life-threatening injuries to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City.
The highway was shut down for about three hours. The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.
