NEW YORK (AP) — Domingo Germán kept delivering on a wet, raw afternoon, tying for the major league lead with his sixth win as the New York Yankees stopped the Minnesota Twins 4-1 in a game called in the bottom of the eighth inning because of rain. Mike Tauchman hit a two-run homer to help New York win for the 11th time in 15 games. The Twins lost two of three after coming into Yankee Stadium this weekend with the best record in the majors. Minnesota now heads north of the border for a three-game series with Toronto starting tonight. Start times tonight, Tuesday and Wednesday nights is 6:05, with the pre-game at 5:30 each night on KGLO.

 

MASON CITY — The NIACC baseball team picked up a four-game sweep of Ellsworth over the weekend at Roosevelt Field to wrap up conference play. On Friday, NIACC picked up a complete-game victory from Michael Oh in a 5-2 win. The Trojans hit five homers in Friday’s second game, with Fox Leum hitting a homer and becoming the 25th member of NIACC’s 100-hit club in an 11-9 victory. On Saturday in the first game, Patrick Pridgen picked up a complete-game victory with a 7-3 decision. In game two, NIACC used a seven-run second on their way to an 11-1 five-inning win. Leum hit his 22nd homer of the season to lead the Trojans. NIACC is now 30-24 and finishes 15-13 in the conference. They are the sixth seed in the upcoming Region XI tournament in Clinton and will face the third seed Southeastern at 3 o’clock on Thursday. Before heading to tournament play, NIACC will host the Luther College JV at 6:30 tonight for Autism Awareness Night, with all proceeds from the game, t-shirt and hat sales and an auction going to the Children’s Autism Center at One Vision in Clear Lake.

 

MASON CITY — The 17th-ranked NIACC softball team swept Ellsworth on Saturday but dropped a pair at Kirkwood on Sunday to end the regular season. On Saturday, NIACC had no problems with wins of 2-0 and 9-0. On Sunday, Kirkwood took the opener 5-3 and then won the nightcap 6-4. NIACC ends the regular season with a record of 28-16 and 20-8 in the conference. The Lady Trojans will play in the Region XI-B tournament in Cedar Rapids starting on Friday.

 

AMES – NIACC sophomore Ben Boerjan is tied for first place after the first round of the Region XI tournament on Sunday at the Veenker Memorial Golf Course on the Iowa State University campus.

Boerjan shot a first-day 71 and shares the lead with Kirkwood’s James Morgan.

NIACC is in fifth place with a 319 heading into Monday’s final 18 holes of the tournament. The Trojans are one shot out of third place as Southwestern and Northeast CC are tied for third at 318.

The top three teams advance to the NJCAA Division II national tournament, which is set for May 21-24 in Plymouth, Ind.

Kirkwood is leading the tournament with a 304 and DMACC is in second with a 310.

Also for the Trojans on Sunday, Jackson Hamlin shot an 80, Austin Eckenrod shot an 82, Zach Martin shot an 86 and Matthew Heinemann shot an 87.

Boerjan is seeking a return trip to the national tournament as he is the lone returner off last year’s team that qualified for nationals.

 

MASON CITY — High school conference golf tournaments take place today:

== The North Central Conference boys tournament will take place at the Mason City Country Club. Clear Lake, St. Edmond and Webster City likely will battle for the team title with the Lions ranked 4th in Class 3A and Webster City ranked 19th, while St. Edmond is ranked 7th in 1A. In the medalist race, Nathan Ferrell of Webster City is ranked 3rd in Class 3A while Tate Storbeck of Clear Lake is 9th. Andrew Gibb of St. Edmond is ranked 2nd individually in Class 1A.

== The North Central Conference girls tournament will be held at the Fort Dodge Country Club. Clear Lake and Humboldt will vie for the team title, with Clear Lake ranked 9th and Humboldt 11th in the latest 3A rankings. In the medalist race, Ashley DeLong of Clear Lake is ranked 10th while Frances Carlson of Humboldt is 11th.

== The Top of Iowa Conference West Division boys tournament takes place at Country Greens Golf Course in Armstrong. Leaders in the team race will include #6/1A Garrigan, #12/1A West Hancock, and #22/2A Forest City. The medalist race will feature #4/1A Andrew Arndorfer of Garrigan and #8/2A Tyler Clouse of Forest City

== The Top of Iowa Conference East Division boys tournament will be held at Acorn Park in St. Ansgar. Nashua-Plainfield comes in as the team favorite, being ranked #10 in 1A.

== The Top of Iowa Conference West Division girls tournament is scheduled to be held at the Gruis Recreation Area in Buffalo Center. Bishop Garrigan is the favorite in the team race, being ranked 3rd in Class 1A, with #18/1A West Hancock, #21/2A Garner-Hayfield-Ventura and #24/2A Forest City also being in the hunt. In the medalist race, ranked golfers include #6/2A Carlee Frayne of GHV, as well as #11 and #12 in Class 1A Anna Berke and Kelly Baade of Garrigan.

== The Top of Iowa Conference East Division girls tournament will be played at Buffalo Run Golf Course in Nora Springs. In the team race, Nashua-Plainfield is ranked #20 in 1A.

The tournaments are scheduled to start at 10 o’clock this morning.
