IOWA CITY — After losing to Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Friday night, Iowa was awarded an at-large berth and the 10th-seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes will face off against 7th-seeded Cincinnati in Columbus, Ohio on Friday. It was a happy head coach Fran McCaffery when he spoke with reporters Sunday night.

AMES — After beating Kansas on Saturday to win the Big 12 Tournament championship, Iowa State earned a 6th-seed in the NCAA Tournament and will face 11th-seeded Ohio State on Friday night in Tulsa. The #6 seed was about where Cyclones head coach Steve Prohm expected it.

No matter what the seed, the opponent would be tough according to Prohm.

For Nick Weiler-Babb, the focus has to be on Iowa State.

Tipoff on Friday will be at approximately 8:50 PM.

 

 

MOLINE, Ill. – The No. 21 Drake University women’s basketball team lost to Missouri State, 94-79, Sunday afternoon in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship game at the TaxSlayer Center.

Drake (27-6), which had its 12-game winning streak stopped in its third-straight MVC championship game appearance, had four players finish in double-figures led by Sammie Bachrodt (Wichita, Kan.) who had 18 points and added seven assists, four steals and three rebounds. Becca Hittner (Urbandale, Iowa) scored 16 points while Sara Rhine (Eldon, Mo.) finished with 14 points. Off the bench, Monica Burich (Urbandale, Iowa) provided 11 points and six rebounds. Bachrodt and Hittner earned MVC All-Tournament honors.

Missouri State (23-9) also had four finish in double figures, led by Alexa Willard, who scored a game-high 30 points and was named the MVP of the tournament. The victory earned the Lady Bears the Valley’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

 

 

HOUSTON (AP) — Chris Paul scored 25 points with 10 assists and tied a career high with six 3-pointers as the Houston Rockets used a big third quarter to pull away and get a 117-102 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The game was close throughout the first half and the Rockets were up by a point at halftime before using a 43-point third quarter, with 15 points from Paul, to extend the lead to 15 to start the fourth. Karl-Anthony Towns had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Timberwolves.

 

 

MASON CITY — The North Iowa Bulls staved off elimination with a 4-1 win over Rochester in the Western Division semifinals on Sunday night at the North Iowa Ice Arena. North Iowa won the best-of-three series opener on Friday night in Mason City 4-2 but dropped the middle game of the series in Rochester on Saturday night 4-3. Last night, Jimmy McDermott had two third-period goals to compliment separate goals from Brendan Studioso and Nick Johnson in the second period. The Bulls will now face Alexandria in the Western Division championship series after the Blizzard knocked off the top-seeded Granite City in a three-game division semifinal. The opening game of the series takes place Friday night at the North Iowa Ice Arena at 7:30.

 

 

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Brock Nelson scored 1:04 into overtime and the New York Islanders beat Minnesota 3-2 to move into a tie atop the Metropolitan Division. Anders Lee scored for the fourth straight game and Jordan Eberle added a goal for New York, which has won five of seven. Thomas Greiss made 32 saves. The Islanders are tied with Washington with 91 points, but currently hold the tiebreaker with a better scoring differential.

 

 

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Saints and former Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman Nick Easton have agreed on a four-year contract. Easton’s agent, Joe Linta, confirmed the deal on Twitter. Easton became a free agent after spending the 2018 season on injured reserve, following neck surgery. Minnesota’s starter at left guard in 2017, Easton is a natural center who could fill the retiring Max Unger’s spot in the middle for the Saints.
