WEBSTER CITY — Down 6-0, the Mason City High softball team scored six runs in the top of the fifth and then scored in the top of the eighth to down 15th-ranked Webster City 7-6 in a Class 4A regional semifinal on Saturday night, as you heard on KRIB. Meredith McGee had a two-run single followed by a grand slam from Sami Miller to tie the ballgame in the fifth. Shaye Theobald gave the Mohawks the lead in the eight on a solo homer. The Mason City defense then stepped up in the bottom of the eighth as the first two batters reached but were stranded on second and third to end the contest. Mason City is now 18-21 on the season and will travel to Charles City tomorrow night to face the fourth-ranked Comets, who beat Waterloo East 6-0 on Saturday night. You can hear the Mason City-Charles City game on KRIB starting at about 6:50 Tuesday night.

MASON CITY — The Newman baseball team opened the defense of their Class 1A state title with a 10-2 win over Belmond-Klemme in a district quarterfinal, as you heard on KGLO. Merritt McCardle was 3-for-3 with two RBI, five stolen bases and two runs scored to lead the Knights offensively. Kyle Armour picked up the win, striking out seven in five innings of work. Newman will face Central Springs, who beat West Hancock 11-6 in a 1A district game played in Sheffield, on Tuesday night in the district semifinal round at Newman. The other side of the bracket had West Fork beat North Union 7-1 while North Iowa beat Northwood-Kensett 8-3. West Fork will face North Iowa at 5 o’clock on Tuesday night, followed by Newman and Central Springs, both those games to be heard on KGLO.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Carlos Santana hit a solo home run that broke a seventh-inning tie and the Cleveland Indians avoided a sweep against the AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins with a 4-3 win. After the Indians lost the first two matchups, All-Star MVP Shane Bieber helped Cleveland salvage the finale and close within 6 ½ games of the Twins.
SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Dylan Frittelli won the John Deere Classic for his first PGA Tour title, closing with a 7-under 64 for a two-stroke victory over Russell Henley. The South African earned a spot next week in the British Open, finishing at 21-under 263 after the bogey-free final round at TPC Deere Run. Henley shot a tournament-best 61.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Sylvia Fowles set a WNBA record with her 157th career double-double and the Minnesota Lynx pulled away in the second half to beat the Phoenix Mercury 75-62. Fowles finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double-double and broke Lisa Leslie’s mark of 156 set from 1997-2009.
