DES MOINES — For the first time since 1981, Osage has won a team title in the traditional state wrestling tournament. The Green Devils had two runners-up and five wrestlers place in scoring 85 team points, seven more than second-place Union of LaPorte City and 19 more points than third-place Centerville. Osage coach Brent Jennings says it’s a great feeling to break a 39-year drought between titles.

Jennings says you can’t always map out a path to a team title and things usually have to happen just right to win a title in a wide-open race.

Jennings says as coach of the program for more than two decades it was great to guide a team to a championship.

120-pounder Nick Fox and 170-pounder Spencer Mooberry fell in their championship matches on Saturday night. Fox lost to Colby Lillegard of Bondurant-Farrar 8-4, while Mooberry dropped an 8-4 decision to Jax Flynn of Solon. Joe Sullivan finished third at 126 pounds, while Averee Abben at 132 and Zach Williams at 160 placed fifth.

DES MOINES — Cullan Schriever became Mason City High School’s third-ever three-time state champion as he won the Class 3A 126 pound title with a 9-4 decision over Carson Taylor of Fort Dodge. The win culminated a return from injury in last year’s state tournament that prevented him from possibly becoming a four-time state champion.

Schriever joins Eddie Kline in the early 1950s and Tim Krieger from the 1980s as the school’s only three-time champions, and credits his coaches for helping him with the accomplishment.

Schriever talks about working back from the injury and disappointment of not being a titleist last year.

Schriever and his brother Colby now get ready to wrestle at the University of Iowa next year, and he was asked what he needs to do to prepare to be part of that program.

Two other area wrestlers won state titles on Saturday night — Tate Hagen of West Hancock beat Cole Clark of Lisbon 7-4 for the Class 1A 195 pound title…and Chet Buss of North Butler-Clarksville won the Class 1A 285 pound title with a 10-2 decision over Ryley Snell of Interstate 35. In the other championship match involving an area wrestler, Clayton McDonough of Central Springs lost his Class 1A 113 pound match 6-2 to Marcel Lopez of New London.

ALGONA — The Clear Lake girls basketball team is headed back to the state tournament after a 65-47 win over Okoboji in a Class 3A regional championship game played in Algona on Saturday night, as you heard on AM-1490 & 96.7-FM KRIB. Lions coach Bart Smith says shutting down Okoboji’s key players was the difference.

Smith says he’s excited to take another group of players to the state tournament.

Chelsey Holck led the Lions with 15 points, while Sara Faber added 12 with Ali Maulsby also making it to double digits with 10. Clear Lake is now 22-2 on the season and will face Davenport Assumption in the Class 3A state quarterfinals next Monday night in a game that’s scheduled to start at 8:30 PM.

MASON CITY — The top-ranked NIACC women outscored second-ranked Kirkwood 26-12 in the second quarter and 28-15 in the third quarter on their way to an 85-64 win on Saturday afternoon in Mason City, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO. Autum Mendez had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Trojans to their 30th straight home win. They are now 27-1 overall and 14-0 in the conference. The NIACC men dropped a 97-84 decision to Kirkwood on Saturday afternoon. Trey Sampson had 21 points and 11 rebounds while Deundra Roberson had 20. NIACC heads to Little Priest Tribal College on Wednesday.

AMES — In a frustrating season for Iowa State Saturday was a low point as the Cyclones were hammered at home by Texas Tech 87-57. Cyclone coach Steve Prohm.

Defense has been a problem all season and it was no different against the Red Raiders.

Iowa State with the loss falls to 4-10 in the Big 12.

CEDAR FALLS — Northern Iowa is closing in on a Missouri Valley championship. The Panthers used a 20-0 second half run to take command in a 64-52 win over Southern Illinois. It was a game of runs that saw the Panthers race out to a 24-11 lead only to have the Salukis close the first half with a 23-2 run.

That’s Panther coach Ben Jacobson. UNI moves to 12-4 in the Valley and they can clinch a share of the regular season title Wednesday night with a victory at home over Evansville.
