MASON CITY – Deundra Roberson scored 24 points and Quentin Hardrict scored 21 points to lead No. 12 NIACC to a 95-81 victory over No. 1 Kirkwood in an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference men’s basketball contest Saturday in the NIACC gym.

NIACC opened up a 48-31 lead at the half.

NIACC (19-3 overall) and Kirkwood (20-3 overall) split the regular season series with the Eagles winning 83-65 in January. The Trojans are 9-1 in the the conference and the Eagles are a half-game back at 8-1.

Also for the Trojans on Saturday, Wendell Matthews scored 13 points, James Harris scored 12 points and Kyle Lang scored 11 points.

 

 

MASON CITY – The No. 5 NIACC women’s basketball team evened the season series with No. 2 Kirkwood Saturday with a 68-62 victory.

NIACC, which dropped a 77-71 decision to Kirkwood in January, received 16 points each from Jada Buford and Tahya Campbell.

NIACC (19-5 overall) and Kirkwood (20-6 overall) are tied for first place in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference with 10-1 marks.

Also for the Lady Trojans on Saturday, Mandy Willems scored nine points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out six assists. The Lady Trojans’ Kelcie Hale scored 12 points.

Kirkwood was led by Natalie Tomaszewski with 12 points. The Eagles’ Leah Robinson scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

NIACC returns to action Wednesday at Little Priest Tribal College in Winnebago, Neb. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.

 

 

IOWA CITY — A wild finish in Iowa City.

Gary Dolphin and Bobby Hansen on the Hawkeye Network, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO last night. Jordan Bohannon’s three pointer with point-six seconds remaining capped a furious rally as 20th ranked Iowa beat Northwestern 80-79, a game the Hawkeyes trailed by 15 with just over four minutes remaining.

The Hawkeyes outscored the Wildcats 23-7 to close the game to move to 8-5 in the Big Ten.

For most of the game it appeared as though the Hawkeyes were headed to a lopsided loss at home. Iowa coach Fran McCaffery

McCaffery was asked if he was surprised when Bohannon’s shot went in.

Vic Law led Northwestern with 24 points as the Wildcats fall to 3-9 in conference play.

 

 

AMES — Iowa State will be off until Saturday’s visit to Big-12 leader Kansas State. Cyclone coach Steve Prohm gave his team a couple of days off after a 92-83 home loss to TCU.

Prohm is not concerned about a lack of confidence after the Cyclones dropped their second home game of the season.

Prohm believes the Cyclones will bounce back with a solid effort.

 

 

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Nick McGlynn had 22 points as Drake beat Northern Iowa 83-77 on Saturday.

D.J. Wilkins had 18 points for Drake (18-7, 7-5 Missouri Valley Conference). Tremell Murphy added 15 points and eight rebounds. Brady Ellingson had 12 points for the home team.

AJ Green had 19 points for the Panthers (10-15, 5-7). Wyatt Lohaus added 16 points. Spencer Haldeman had 12 points.

The Bulldogs evened the season series against the Panthers with the win. Northern Iowa defeated Drake 57-54 on Jan. 13. Drake faces Southern Illinois on the road on Tuesday. Northern Iowa plays Illinois State at home on Wednesday.

 

 

COLUMBUS, OHIO — The 16th ranked Iowa Hawkeye women claimed another road win on Sunday at Ohio State, 78-52. The Hawkeyes outscored the Buckeyes 27-10 in the third quarter as they move to 10-3 in the Big Ten and 19-5 overall.

Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. Megan Gustafson scored 29 points and added 16 rebounds. It was her 78th double-double of her career, tying the Big Ten record.

Mason City native Makenzie Meyer sat out for a second straight game as she deals with a knee injury.

 

 

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Kristin Scott scored 15 points in the third quarter, another 10 in the fourth and finished with 29 and No. 22 Iowa State pulled away from West Virginia for its fourth-straight win, 77-61 on Saturday night.

Bridget Carleton had 12 of her 23 points in the first half when the Cyclones (18-5, 8-3 Big 12 Conference) took a 33-26 lead. Iowa State scored 20 points in the first quarter but struggled in the second, making just 3 of 13 shots but keeping the lead by making 7 of 9 from the foul line.

Scott, who leads the Big 12 in field-goal percentage (67) and 3-point percentage (58) in conference games, finished 12 of 17 from the field and 3 of 7 from distance. They Cyclones shot 59 percent in the second half. Carleton had 12 rebounds, seven assists, two steals and two blocks.

 

 

CLEAR LAKE — The Clear Lake girls overcame 3-of-19 shooting in the first quarter to down Pocahontas 71-31 in a Class 3A Region 2 quarterfinal in Clear Lake on Saturday night, as you heard on AM-1490 & 96.7-FM KRIB. Lexi Fasbender sank eight three-pointers for all of her 24 points in the contest while Sara Faber added 19. Clear Lake improves to 16-4 and now will face a 10-12 Kuemper of Carroll team in a regional semifinal on Wednesday night in Humboldt that you’ll hear on KRIB starting at 7 o’clock.

 

 

MASON CITY — The Newman girls had to wait two days but picked up a win in their tournament opener with a 70-45 victory over North Iowa in a Class 1A regional first round game. Kailah Thompson had 19 points, while Keelan Curley and Molly McGuire each added 10. Newman improves to 13-8 on the season and is scheduled to travel to Algona on Tuesday to face Bishop Garrigan in a regional quarterfinal round game that you’ll hear on KGLO starting at about 7 o’clock.

MASON CITY — In regular season basketball Saturday, the Mason City High girls jumped out to a 27-2 lead after the first quarter on their way to an 85-35 win over Fort Dodge, as you heard on KGLO. Megan Meyer had 24 points, Anna Deets added 16 while Anna Lensing chipped in 14 for the Mohawks, who are now 12-8 heading into their regular-season finale with Des Moines North, which is scheduled for 5:30 this afternoon, and you can hear it on KGLO. In the boys game, Fort Dodge outscored Mason City 19-6 in the second quarter as the Dodgers picked up a 61-41 win. Jarvorius Toney had 19 to lead the Mohawks, who drop to 6-13 and will travel to Charles City on Tuesday evening.

MASON CITY – The No. 19 NIACC wrestling team placed third at the NJCAA Central District Tournament on Sunday in the NIACC gym.

NIACC qualified seven wrestlers for the NJCAA Division I national meet, which will be held in Council Bluffs on March 1-2.

The Trojans earned their third-place finish with 115.5 points. No. 4 Iowa Central was the team champion with 163.5 points and No. 5 Ellsworth was second with 154 points.

NIACC had three second-place finishers in Mark Gonzales (125), Brock Luthens (133) and Tony Mendoza (149).

Also qualifying for the national meet were Hunter Luke (3rd at 141), Mason Carpenter (third at 174), Reldon Miller (4th at 184) and Zach Santee (3rd at 285).

In the 125-pound title match, Iowa Central’s Kevin Radcliff topped Gonazles by injury default in 3 minutes, 54 seconds.

In the 133-pound title match, Ellsworth’s Hector Candelaria topped Luthens, 3-1.

In the 149-pound title match, Ellsworth’s Cardeionte Wilson edged Mendoza 7-6 in an ultimate tie-breaker.

In the 141-pound third-place match, Luke took a 12-2 major decision from Iowa Central’s Damond Lockner.

In the 174-pound third-place match, Carpenter stopped Iowa Lakes’ Steven Raines, 8-3.

In the 285-pound third-place match, Santee edged Iowa Central’s Gunner Cash, 5-4. It was the second victory of the tournament for Santee over Cash. Santee nipped Cash 2-1 in the quarterfinal round, as well.

Iowa Central’s Ethan Karsten, the 157-pound champion, was selected as the meet’s most outstanding wrestler. Ellsworths Cole Spree was voted as the league’s coach of the year.
