MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A win by the Washington Nationals over the Minnesota Twins made the American League Central Division race a lot more interesting.

Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto each homered and drove in three runs as the Nationals beat Minnesota 12-6 Thursday night, cutting the Twins divisional lead to 3 ½ games ahead of a critical series in Cleveland.

Adam Eaton and Yan Gomes also homered and Asdrúbal Cabrera added two run-scoring hits for the Nationals, who maintained their 3 ½-game lead for the top NL wild-card spot over the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers.

Minnesota’s divisional lead fell for the second straight game as the Twins head to Cleveland for three-game series beginning Friday, the final games between the teams this season. Cleveland was idle Thursday. The Twins lost three games off their lead in the last five days.

And the Twins lost yet another player to injury, utility infielder Ehire Adrianza, who strained his right oblique swinging at a pitch in the second with two on. Adrianza was hurting so badly that manager Rocco Baldelli told him to bunt the runners along, which he did.

GARNER — Clear Lake travels to Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in a non-district matchup of Class 2A teams tonight. The 2nd-ranked Lions are 2-0 after a 35-6 win at Waverly-Shell Rock last week. After using the pass the majority of the time in their opening win over Osage, the Lions mixed things up against the Go-Hawks last week with a combination of the passing and running game . Coach Jared DeVries says the growth of the line has helped on offense.

DeVries expects the rivalry with the Cardinals to continue to provide a tough game tonight.

Garner-Hayfield-Ventura is 1-1 under coach Darrell Schumacher, who returns to be the head coach of the program after leading the Cardinals from 1984-1995. You can hear the Clear Lake/Garner-Hayfield-Ventura game on AM-1490 & 96.7-FM KRIB and kribam.com starting with the pre-game at 6:45 with kickoff scheduled for 7:30.

MASON CITY — Mason City High hosts Marshalltown in non-district Class 4A football tonight. The Mohawks are 0-2 after a 54-13 loss to Waterloo West last week. Mason City coach Brandon Krusey says he saw progress from his club between their opening week loss to Fort Dodge and last week’s game.

Krusey hopes some of that momentum carries over to tonight.

The Bobcats come in at 2-0 after wins over Des Moines North and Ottumwa. You can hear the Mason City-Marshalltown game on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com starting with the pre-game at about 6:40 with the kickoff scheduled for 7 o’clock.

NASHUA — A pair of 0-2 teams match up in Nashua tonight as Newman travels to Nashua-Plainfield. Freshman Max Burt threw for just over 200 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s 20-13 loss to Bishop Garrigan of Algona. The Huskies fell 6-2 to North Butler in their opener before a 32-6 loss last week at Belmond-Klemme. You can hear the Newman/Nashua-Plainfield game on 93.9 KIA The Country Moose and 939kia.com starting with the pre-game at about 6:45 with the kickoff at 7 o’clock.
