NEW YORK (AP) — Given the peerless power of the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins, the AL Division Series between the Bomba Squad and the Bronx Bombers seems like a mighty bout. AL Central champion Minnesota set a big league record with 307 home runs and the AL East-winning Yankees were just behind at 306, both blowing by the previous mark of 267 set by New York last year. José Berríos will start the AL Division Series opener for the Twins. Berríos was 14-8 with a 3.68 ERA and 195 strikeouts in 200 1/3 innings. James Paxton (15-6, 3.82) will start Friday night’s game for the Yankees. You can hear the Twins and Yankees tonight on AM-1300 KGLO starting with the pre-game at 5 o’clock with first pitch from Yankee Stadium scheduled for just after 6:05. The second game of the series takes place on Saturday, with a 3 o’clock pre-game and 4:05 first pitch on KGLO.
CLEAR LAKE — 2nd-ranked Clear Lake hosts 9th-ranked Crestwood in Class 2A District 3 football tonight. The Lions lost at Crestwood last year in a game that cost them not only the district title but a spot in the playoffs. Clear Lake coach Jared DeVries says his team won’t be looking at what happened in the past heading into tonight’s contest.
Despite losing their starting quarterback, DeVries knows the Crestwood offense will be tough to contain.
Crestwood comes in with a 3-2 record after winning their district opener last week. You can hear the Clear Lake-Crestwood game on AM-1490/96.7-FM KRIB and kribam.com starting with the pre-game at 6:45, with kickoff from Lions Field scheduled for 7:30.
MASON CITY — It’s Homecoming at Mason City High School tonight as the Mohawks host Indianola in Class 4A District 6 play. Mason City is in search of their first win of the season as they face an Indianola squad that Mohawk coach Brandon Krusey says is a solid ballclub.
Due to Twins baseball taking place on KGLO, the Mason City-Indianola game will be heard over on Super Hits 102.7-FM and superhits1027.com starting with the pre-game at about 7 o’clock with kickoff slated for 7:30
POSTVILLE — Newman hits the road tonight to face Postville in Class A District 4. The Knights are 2-1 in district play and 2-3 overall after beating Starmont last week. They’ll face a Postville team that is 1-4 and 1-2 in the district after beating Central Springs 43-6 last week. You can hear the Newman-Postville game on 93.9 KIA The Country Moose starting with the pre-game at about 6:45 with kickoff scheduled for 7 o’clock.
