Mason City Community Theatre and H&R Block are presenting “The Gingerbread Lady,” by Neil Simon, a dark comedy about addiction, abuse, and fading youth. With his characteristic wit and humor, Simon’s serious story of lost misfits creates an amusing and deeply touching comedy with the atmosphere of great sadness. Evy Meara is a cabaret singer whose career, marriage, and health all have been destroyed by alcohol. After a short stay in rehab, her best friend age-defying Toby, her daughter Polly, and Jimmy Perry, a gay out of work actor try to help her adjust to sobriety with a jolly birthday party. Enter Lou Tanner, a former lover, who ends up giving her a black eye. The party is a wash out, the “gingerbread lady” falls off the wagon and hits the ropes once again.
“The Gingerbread Lady” is directed by Steve Musson and the cast includes: Troy Sundt (Jimmy), Jacob Grey (Manolo), Lori Holthaus (Toby), Michelle Murray (Evy), Kasey Schlichte (Polly) and Marc Murray (Lou).
