Clear Lake council approves City Beach project contract

CLEAR LAKE — The Clear Lake City Council last night approved the contract for the second phase of the City Beach Enhancement Project.

Peterson Construction of Webster City was awarded the contract after submitting a base bid amount of $1,033,000, with two alternatives in the bid package dealing with additional plants and landscaping bringing the total cost to $1,087,000. That’s almost 10% below the engineer’s estimated cost prior to bidding.

This phase of the project includes the construction of a splash pad, a new restroom facility, a sun shade shelter, as well as landscaping and lighting improvements. Mayor Nelson Crabb says the improvements are well needed for that area.  “There will be additional splash pads, some for the little tikes and some as they get older. It will be quite an area through there. There will be a pavilion for parents, grandparents, friends to sit in while the young people are running through the splash area, and improve the restroom restrooms that were there. They were 20-25 years old as they were, so that’s all being improved.”

Crabb says the project will be a great draw for people to utilize the City Beach area.  “Quite a project, but really maintaining the view that goes through there. We have already improved the water treatment plant, that’s a wonderful looking building right now, and then you get this city beach enhancement all along there, it’ll be a great, great area for people in the summer to come to.”

Peterson Construction was the general contractor that built the aquatic center in 2007.
